It seems that it’s not just us humans who feel safer going to a date armed with a gift or two… But while most men will go for the safe option of flowers or chocolate, dead flies are the gifts of choice for dates in certain corners of the animal kingdom.
A study in Denmark discovered that male nursery spiders that try to mate without bringing a gift have very little chance of getting lucky. Silk-wrapped bits of flower or insects work as decoys while the males have their way with the females, and the larger and more impressive the gift, the better the result.
